Overview
Zaxx Tech Solutions was called to a home in Salem, Virginia to troubleshoot an existing Reolink security camera system that had stopped working properly. This wasn't a new install — it was a repair service call to bring a system the homeowners already owned back to life.
If your Reolink cameras suddenly went offline, won't show up in the app, or you moved into a house with a camera system nobody can log into, this project is a good example of how we approach that kind of problem: find the actual cause, fix it, and only replace equipment when it truly needs replacing.
The Problem
The homeowners had recently moved into the property and inherited the previous owner's Reolink setup — three cameras plus a wired Reolink video doorbell. On paper it was a good system. In practice, it wasn't properly communicating through the home network, and the cameras weren't usable from their phones.
Before calling us, they had tried to find help locally and had a hard time finding someone knowledgeable enough to actually troubleshoot it. That's common with inherited systems: the cameras, recorder settings, doorbell wiring and home network are all connected, and a fix in one place doesn't help if the problem is somewhere else.
What the homeowners were dealing with
- An inherited Reolink system set up by the previous owner
- Cameras not communicating correctly over the network
- A wired Reolink doorbell that wasn’t working
- No reliable way to view cameras from their phones
- Trouble finding local help that could diagnose it
Diagnosis
Rather than assuming the cameras were bad and swapping in new hardware, we worked through the system from the network side and the device side at the same time. That meant checking the physical connection between the router and the network switch, reviewing how the router was configured, testing each Reolink camera individually, and checking the wiring to the doorbell.
The service call turned out to involve both: network problems that kept the Reolink devices from talking to each other properly, and device-level issues — leftover configuration on the cameras and a short in the doorbell's wiring connection. Fixing only one side would have left the homeowners with a system that still didn't work.
Work Completed
Here's everything we did during the visit to get this Salem home's Reolink system running again:
New Ethernet run from router to switch
The link between the router and the network switch was unreliable, so we ran a new Ethernet cable between them. That gave the switch — and every camera behind it — a solid, dependable path back to the router.
Router & network configuration corrected
We corrected the router and network settings that were keeping the Reolink devices from communicating properly, so the cameras could reach the recorder, the internet and the app the way they are supposed to.
Three Reolink cameras factory reset & reconfigured
The inherited cameras still carried the previous owner’s settings and credentials. Each of the three cameras was factory reset and then configured from scratch for the new homeowners.
Cameras re-added to the Reolink system
After the resets, all three cameras were added back into the Reolink system and checked one by one to confirm live video and normal operation.
Wired Reolink doorbell short located & repaired
The wired Reolink doorbell was affected by a short in its wiring connection. We traced the fault, repaired the connection and brought the doorbell back online with the rest of the system.
Reolink app set up on both phones
Finally, we configured the Reolink mobile app on both homeowners’ phones and verified that each of them could open the app and view every camera normally.
Result
All three cameras and the wired doorbell were restored to working condition, and the system now communicates properly through the home network. The homeowners kept the equipment they already had — the existing Reolink system was repaired rather than replaced.
Most importantly, both homeowners can now open the Reolink app on their own phones and view their cameras normally again. What started as an inherited system nobody could make sense of is now a camera setup they actually control and can rely on.

This job combined Reolink camera repair and wired camera troubleshooting with home network troubleshooting, Ethernet cabling and router configuration — because in most homes, the cameras are only as reliable as the network behind them.
