Starlink Mounting Options: Roof, Pole, Wall & Deck Explained

Starlink lives or dies by its view of the sky, and the mount is what gets the dish into that view and keeps it there through Virginia weather. Pick the wrong mount and you get dropouts, leaks, or a dish that shifts in the wind. Here is a plain comparison of the main options and how we choose between them.
Zaxx Tech Solutions installs every one of these mounts as part of a professional Starlink installation.
First Principle: Height and Clear Sky Win
Before choosing a mount type, the goal is always the same — get the dish where it has the clearest, highest, most unobstructed view of the northern sky. Trees and roof lines are the enemy. The best mount is whichever one clears your obstructions most reliably.
Roof Mount
Best for: most homes, especially where trees or a tall roof line block a lower position.
- Gets the dish up high, above most obstructions
- Secure and out of the way
- Requires proper flashing and sealing so there are no leaks — this is where a professional install matters most
Pole Mount
Best for: properties with open ground and a clear-sky spot away from the house, or where you want to avoid roof penetrations.
- Very stable when set in concrete or on a solid base
- Can be placed exactly where the sky is clearest
- Great for yards, fields, and rural lots common around the New River Valley
Wall Mount
Best for: single-story homes, gable ends, and situations where a wall gives enough height with an easy cable path inside.
- Simple, sturdy, and no roof penetration
- Short, clean cable run into the home
- Works well when the wall faces open sky
Deck or Railing Mount
Best for: temporary setups, rentals, or spots where a deck already has a clear view of the sky.
- Fast to install and easy to relocate
- No permanent penetrations
- Only works if the deck's sky view is genuinely unobstructed
Then Comes the Cable and WiFi
Whatever the mount, the install is not done until the cable is routed cleanly and sealed against the weather, the router is placed for good coverage, and — for larger or multi-building properties — hardwired access points or mesh WiFi extend the signal where you need it.
We Pick the Right Mount for Your Property
